The US solar thermal panel manufacturer Fafco has developed a photovoltaic thermal heat pump solution for water and pool heating.
“The solution uses an open-loop solar drain-back system that is coupled to the Phoenix and mounted on a wall near a hot water tank,” said the company’s founder, Freeman Ford PV magazine. “The simplicity of the system is suitable for a solar system that is easy to understand and install together with an all-in-one heat pump, a circulation module and an additional heat storage unit of approx. 5 kWh.”
The Phoenix system consists of three elements: a CoolPV photovoltaic thermal (PVT) module manufactured by Fafco; a 5 kWh thermal battery with heat pump, two braised heat exchangers, two pumps and multifunctional software; and a 50 gallon electric water heater made by unspecified California manufacturers.
“The system consists of several well-known and proven technologies that are linked in novel ways to issued and pending patents,” said Ford. “The system uses software for a variety of purposes, including optimizing performance and load levels for the utilities.”
According to Fafco, the two circulation pumps with speed control are designed for optimum efficiency. One supplies the solar circuit and the other leads the heated water to and from the hot water storage tank. These pumps are connected to the refrigerant circuit of the heat pump via the two specified, optimized and tested soldered plate heat exchangers.
According to the manufacturer, the system has several advantages over what is available on the market today. For example, the system is connected to 120 VAC, eliminating the need to rewire for 220 VAC, and is said to be 50% more efficient than the air-powered systems sold today. “It’s also designed to be retrofitted in existing systems or another version of it can be used in new homes,” said Ford. to shift to the low load. “
The 60-cell monocrystalline PVT panel consists of a photovoltaic module from the US manufacturer Silfab which was retrofitted by Fafco with his own thermal collector system. It is available with PV output powers from 310 to 330 W and conversion efficiencies from 18.2 to 19.4%. The open circuit voltage ranges from 36.69 to 40.50 V and the short circuit current from 10.22 to 10.42 A.

The thermal panel, which is the same for all three module wattages, has an operating pressure of 20 pounds per square inch (psi) and an operating temperature range of 15 to 38 degrees Celsius. Its stagnation temperature is 58 degrees Celsius. For a commercial pool case study, the manufacturer recommends installing 40 CoolPV modules with a total output of over 12 kW.
