Rotork : fluid power and electric actuators installed at modernised Spanish coking plant

Rotork fluid technology and electric drives installed in modernized Spanish coking plant

Rotork electrical and fluid power rotary and part-turn actuators were installed in a Spanish coking plant.

More than 100 Rotork IQ3 and IQT3 intelligent electric actuators and GT, LP, CP and GP pneumatic actuators have been installed in ArcelorMittal’s coking plant in Gijon, the largest city in northern Asturias. The plant is the only one in Spain that makes steel from iron ore.

The actuators on gate valves and butterfly valves of the coke plant were installed in two coke batteries, each consisting of 45 individual coke ovens that feed two blast furnaces. The actuators control the flow of liquid in cooling water, coke gas, stripping water, hydrocarbon, deacidified water, H2S / NH3 vapors and raw tar systems.

The coke batteries have been modernized since 2017 and have been in operation since the beginning of 2020.

Rotork’s IQ range of intelligent electric actuators is designed for isolation or control tasks. Suitable for 1-phase, 3-phase and DC power supplies, the standard IQ series of electric part-turn actuators offers a direct torque range of 50 to 3,000 Nm (37 to 2,200 lbf.ft).

Rotork’s extensive range of pneumatic actuators is available in rack and pinion (GT), linear (LP), Scotch Yoke (CP) and Heavy-Duty Scotch Yoke (GP) designs. Many are designed for critical high speed failsafe or emergency shutdown tasks in harsh environments.
