Oil refinery secures £7.2m hydrogen furnace grant

Essar Oil UK has raised £ 7.2 million in government funding to build a hydrogen furnace at its Stanlow refinery in Cheshire.

The company will install a new furnace in its raw distillation plant that can run on 100% hydrogen.

It is believed to be the first refinery-based furnace in the UK that can run entirely on hydrogen.

With the new system, the refinery, which supplies nearly 16% of all road fuel used in the UK, will cut its annual carbon emissions by 11%.

Jon Barden, Essar’s Chief Operating Officer, commented, “The funding from BEIS is an endorsement of the steps we are taking and a signal of the government’s commitment to transforming the Northwest into a clean energy hub that provides jobs and for years to come Economic growth supports come. “
