Furnace Oil clean-up operation underway

The separator tanks with blast furnace oil in the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery, managed by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, were overflowing with rainwater after heavy rains in the past two days in the Sapugaskanda area drifts through the Pattivila Canal into the Kelani River when the current rainfall subsides and the water level in the Kelani River sinks. The Navy and Sri Lankan Coast Guard have taken steps to siphon off the exposed blast furnace oil and prevent further spread. The Heiyanthuduwa area in Sapugaskanda was flooded due to heavy rainfall.
