Explosions create fire at Hickory propane Company

HICKORY – A series of explosions at a hickory propane company has injured employees and damaged property on site, according to reports from the crime scene.

The explosions occurred at James Oxygen and Supply around 1:30 p.m.

Firefighters from Hickory, Mountain View and Long View extinguish flames and assess damage from propane explosions off US Highway 321 in Hickory.

Byers said the employee’s condition was at least serious as the person had to be transported by helicopter.

Firefighters put out the fire at 3 p.m. and there was no danger from the chemicals on site, Byers said.

She said at least one truck and several outdoor tanks were damaged in the fire, based on information the fire department gathered around 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

The cause of the fire is not known. Byers said it would likely take time to make that decision.

Erik McMillan, owner of nearby Invictus Lighting, said he and some of the company’s employees came outside when they shook the building and heard noises.

“The first time we got outside we saw a cloud of smoke, and when we started looking, you could see the fireballs rising over the roof of the building,” said McMillan.
