AMPLY Power and Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions Collaborate on Bus Fleet Electrification and Solar-Powered Overhead Charging

AMPLY CEO Vic Shao introduces the new solution today at Greenbiz’s VERGE Electrify virtual conference. Wednesday May 26, 2021, at the 11:30 a.m. PT as part of the innovation showcase. Companies that have worked on this offer will then be represented in a panel from the virtual AMPLY booth 1:15 p.m. PT.

“Solar PPAs and managed charging can help fleet operators double the cost savings EVs are already making compared to diesel. Solar generation is usually an afterthought, and we’ve developed this unique solution after we’ve seen how Transit agencies are struggling with the associated costs of developing an overhead loading system, “said Vic Shao, CEO of AMPLY Power. “Unlike diesel prices, electricity prices can fluctuate widely during the day, sometimes up to 400%. This makes it impossible to time the market and eliminate potential savings on electric vehicles. By combining overhead charging with a fixed flow rate we can. ” help fleets make their budgets more predictable and reduce their risk of high rates. “

Once built and installed in a depot, AMPLY Power and Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions manage the solar charging and maintenance operations through a PPA, a financing model common in the commercial solar industry. The solar and charging contracts have a term of 20 to 25 years and offer a fixed electricity price without prior investments.

“Our collaboration with AMPLY goes beyond solar carports with chargers,” he said Dan Alcombright, Managing Director for Growth Implementation at Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions. “We strive to support fleets in achieving their emission-free goals, while at the same time integrating more reliability into their operations and reducing their energy costs for charging.”

The complete offer includes all aspects of the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and solar carports as well as the support model Charging-as-a-Service from AMPLY. AMPLY simplifies the transition to electric vehicles for fleets by taking end-to-end responsibility for all vehicle charging requirements, from cloud-based system design to installing local site controls. The company’s proprietary OMEGA ™ back-end software and operating methods enable fleets to reduce electricity costs by optimizing EV charging and other energy use in public and private depots. This process maximizes existing electrical capacity to avoid costly utility upgrades where possible.

Teichert, a building and construction company founded in 1887 (one of the oldest in California) is the designer of the PIDE roofing and the solar carports. Customer-specific canopies complement a variety of park configurations within a depot and across multiple locations. This maximizes the available parking space while minimizing the impact on the functionality of the site.

The PIDE-enabled system was tested during an on-site demonstration Lancaster, California in March of this year. A BYD K9 transit bus equipped with overhead charging and an SLS 301 direct current fast charger from Schunk Transit Systems SLS 301 were used in the demonstration.

AMPLY Power has partnered with several transit agencies to support their switch to electricity, including Tri Delta Transit, Solano County Transit, and the Anaheim Transportation Network. AMPLY recently partnered with the California Mobility Center to accelerate the transition to electric mobility California and was also named on the 2021 Global Cleantech 100 list for the second year in a row.
